Windmills at Zaanse Schans
De Zaanse Schans, near Zaandam, is a charming windmill village, traditional Dutch wooden houses all green and white, tulip gardens, cheese farm, clog factory and craft centre. Zaanse Schans has a few cafes and restaurants - some more expensive than others - and the inevitable souvenir shops, though the wooden toyshop is well worth a look-see. The cheese farm shop is also interesting, if smelly, but take your camera to snap yourself with a traditionally dressed Dutch serving girl. It's also worth walking around the shop tasting the various cheeses on offer!

Alkmaar Cheesemarket
Alkmaar is a small and pretty city in North Holland, not far from the sea, famous for its cheese, its history & football(soccer) team AZ Alkmaar: it dates back to 1254, when it was granted city rights. Alkmaar is famous for having one of the few remaining cheese markets in the Netherlands. Every Friday (10am – noon), April through September, the Dutch put on traditional dress for the region and demonstrate how a merchants’ market operated in the past. If there is no cheese market, there is still so much to see. There is a lot of old architecture, medieval churches, beautiful old bridges & a great shopping area with typical small dutch streets. In the centre of Alkmaar are a number of canals lined with little shops, bars and restaurants. As in other Dutch towns and cities you can do a boat tour on the canal, which takes about an hour and leaves from near the Waagplein, the main market square. Just outside Alkmaar you can visit a beautiful area which is called “De Schermer”. Old mills, farms and villages are like it was hundred years ago. Also the artist village of Bergen is close to Alkmaar. Great old center with good restaurants & close to the sea, really nice to visit.
Alkmaar is an ideal starting point to visit places in the area, because distances really are not big!
