                        Canals of Amsterdam

Amsterdam

Known as the ‘Venice of the North’, Amsterdam is a city built on a cobweb of canals that boasts one of the most picturesque settings in the world. True, it is a city full of hazy coffee shops where stoners smoke all day and where prostitutes standing in red−lit windows try to lure in prospective customers, but there is much more to the Dutch capital than hookers and hash. It boasts world−class museums, great architecture and a buzzing nightlife making it the perfect city for a few days break.

Look once, and it is a pretty European city laced with canals; twice and it becomes a cultural centre with an incredible collection of art. Look for a third time and you will see a decadent party town where anything goes. So which is the real Amsterdam? The romantic will adore the lazy curves of the city's waterways and enjoy watching from cafés in cobbled streets or picturesque bridges as the mood of the city changes with the weather. Even in the rain there's magic to Amsterdam.

Laid out on a network of canals, with few skyscrapers in its skyline, Amsterdam stands out among the world’s major cities. Perhaps most famous for its Red Light District and coffeehouses, Amsterdam has much more to offer visitors than a healthy nightlife. Exploring the web of canals and bridges that make up the beautiful cityscape will lead you to a wide variety of treasures that include the Van GoghMuseum, the medieval MontelbaanTower, or the Botanical Gardens. Amsterdam truly has something to interest everyone, all in a beautiful and unique setting

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

Museums in Amsterdam are among the main tourist attractions. The Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum are the most popular choices, but there are many, many more. Amsterdam has over fifty museums, which attract millions of visitors every year. Alongside the wealth of magestic Golden Age paintings, you'll find exciting modern art, press, film, theatre and photography museums and some unique Dutch treats like the Heineken Experience, the Ajax Museum and the Houseboat Museum. And Amsterdam wouldn't be Amsterdam without the likes of the Sex, Erotic, Hash or Torture museums. For kids there is the impressive NEMO; a hands-on, science and technology museum housed in an unmissable, boat-shaped building.

The number of international restaurants in Amsterdam is rather mind-boggling. Name a country and there will be a restaurant with that specific cuisine. Typically Dutch are the snackbars, where most Dutch people enjoy the large fries topped with mayonaise or the famous croquets, called '’kroketten” . Another

Dutch specialty are  pancakes and there are a lot of  Pancake restaurants in Amsterdam. Originally, Dutch dishes are based on simple ingredients, (boiled potatoes, boiled vegetables, country food), but nowadays Dutch cuisine is largely influenced by the French.
